Аннотация:
The paper analyzes the developed approaches to the definition of a suburban area in the Russian urban planning theory and practice and the concept of urban fringe belts that was investigated in detail in the English-speaking world. Similarities and differences of these concepts, the internal structure of their land use and their role in urban development are emphasized.
